Based on his successful workshops at the 2009 COSEBOC Annual Gathering in New Orleans, David Chadwell gave a provocative and highly informative webinar on What is Working in Classes of Boys: Practical Strategies for Classroom Teachers and Leaders, the first of many webinars to come through the sponsorship and support of COSEBOC.

In his presentation, David described the minimum of strategies that tend to work with boys and within classrooms of all-boys. The strategies recognized, honored, supported, and challenged the needs and opportunities of boys based upon recent research about gender differences as well as work with over 200 schools involved in single-gender education. Theory and research was introduced and references supplied for further reading. Strategies were applied within pre-K through grade 12 across all subject areas. Strategies included community building, classroom management, direct instruction and work time. Participants were left with practical tools for the classroom whether single-gender or coed that address the needs of boys and why these strategies can work.

About David: David Chadwell is the Coordinator for Single-Gender Initiatives for the South Carolina Department of Education. Currently David works with over 200 schools within South Carolina that are involved with single-gender education. He conducts training sessions for teachers and school districts as well as visits classrooms and provides feedback for teachers. This work has allowed him to see first hand what can happen in classrooms of boys, what works and what doesn’t work. He has written a book, A Gendered Choice, on how to create a single-gender program (to be published by Corwin in fall 2009).
