DR. GLORIA LADSON-BILLINGS

Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings is the author of the critically acclaimed books, The Dreamkeepers: Successful Teachers of African American Children, Crossing over to Canaan: The Journey of New Teachers in Diverse Classrooms, and Beyond the Big House: African American Educators on Teacher Education. She is editor of 6 other books and author of more than 100 journal articles and book chapters. She is the former editor of the American Educational Research Journal and a member of several editorial boards. Her work has won numerous scholarly awards, including the H. I. Romnes Faculty Fellowship, Spencer Post-doctoral Fellowship, and the Palmer O. Johnson outstanding research award.

DR. CHRISTOPHER EMDIN

Dr. Christopher Emdin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Science and Technology at Teachers College, Columbia University where he also serves as Director of Science Education at the Center for Health Equity and Urban Science Education. He is a social critic, public intellectual and science advocate whose commentary on issues of race, culture, inequality and education have appeared in dozens of influential periodicals including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post. ROBERTO RIVERA

Roberto Rivera is an expert in connecting positive youth development to community development using culturally relevant methods. He has employed asset-based and social emotional learning principles for over ten years in community-based youth work in Los Angeles, Milwaukee, and Chicago. He has most recently been named one of the “Top Young Change Agents in America” by the Search for Common Ground Coalition, and in 2012 became a fellow through the Unreasonable Institute for his social entrepreneurship skills. Mr. Rivera speaks at national and international conferences expressing powerful learning lessons linking the asset framework to organizational and community efforts with and for young people. BARRINGTON IRVING

Captain Barrington Irving has traveled to 50 countries, conducted more than 30 STEM expeditions, and successfully challenged middle school students to build a car faster than a Ferrari 430 and then high schoolers to build a plane he flew on its test flight. In 2007, he set two world records—at age 23—as the youngest person and first black pilot to fly solo around the world. He has a passion to explore, inspire, and educate others. Now 34, Barrington is an explorer that investigates real world STEM problems across the globe. Launched in 2014, the Flying Classroom is a K-8 STEM+ digital curriculum that challenges students to design innovative solutions to the problems he investigates.
