The Fourth Annual Gathering of Leaders:
Re-imagining Schooling for Boys and Young Men of Color

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

It is with a great deal of enthusiasm that I write to announce the 4th annual Gathering of Leaders, the premier event for the Coalition of Schools Educating Boys of Color. The Gathering has become well known for the quality of its program and highly regarded for the unrelenting focus on the affirmative development and education of boys and young men of color.
The Coalition of Schools Educating Boys of Color intends to continue this tradition at the upcoming 2010 Gathering.  I am also pleased to announce that the School of Education at Howard University under the leadership of Dean Lesley Fenwick will serve as the conference site. Howard University is well known for the quality of its academic program and commitment to high standards of academic excellence.

The Gathering dates are April 22 - 24, 2010.  The theme is, Re-Imagining Schooling for Boys and Young Men of Color

As the only national organization fully dedicated to the affirmative development and education of male students of color, the theme of Re-Imagining Schooling poses an important provocation, challenge and opportunity.

Gathering participants will have the time to grapple with and converse about this theme with old friends and new associates. The Gathering presents the perfect forum for us to test new paradigms and to share promising practice. Our essential questions are what does re imagined schooling look like for male students of color and how will these schools insure successful outcomes for this group of students?

We will enjoy a robust program complete with a special pre- session for new leaders hosted several of the COSEBOC school founders and leaders. This session will be designed to give the new leaders support, advice and constructive tools and strategies essential to their success. Their will also be a first time sit down dinner reception hosted by the Motion Picture Association of America for a limited number of registered gathering attendees. This reception will take place on the evening prior to the official opening day of the conference. More details will be forthcoming. We are also investigating the possibility of a congressional briefing on April 22nd. More details will be provided. The opening plenary will take place on April 23rd. Conference participants will experience a comprehensive slate of workshops as well as time to reflect and share learning’s with others. The Gathering concludes on April 24th.

The conference registration fee is $395 for non-COSEBOC members, $295 for COSEBOC members (details on how to become a member).  We are also offering a college student and rate of $75 per day with and valid ID of the school attended.

In the weeks ahead, we will provide gathering attendees with agenda updates, workshops, sign-up procedures for workshops, and hotel information for the beautiful Westin Hotel in Center City (1400 M Street NW Washington, D.C., 20005).

This will be a conference not to be missed.  It will be ground breaking.  Please make your plans early.  We anticipate full enrollment.

See you in D.C.
