The Fourth Annual Gathering of Leaders:
Call for Workshop Proposals - CLOSED

The Coalition of Schools Educating Boys of Color (COSEBOC) is seeking presenters for its Fourth Annual Gathering of Leaders, Re-Imagining Schooling for Boys and Young Men of Color, to be held at Howard University’s School of Education in Washington, D.C., April 22 - 24, 2010.

The theme of Re-Imagining Schooling for Boys and Young Men of Color poses an important provocation, challenge and opportunity.  COSEBOC seeks presenters who are actively engaged in the innovative implementation of promising practices and policy that address the core areas of the Standards and Promising Practices for Schools Educating Boys of Color, developed by COSEBOC in partnership with the Metropolitan Center for Urban Education at New York University.  These core areas are:

  • Assessment
  • Parent/Family/Community Partnerships
  • Curriculum and Instruction
  • School Environment-Climate
  • School Leadership
  • School Counseling/Guidance
  • School Organization. 

Interest Areas

COSEBOC is especially interested in workshops that are conscious of the Pre K – 12 experiences of boys of color.  Potential topics include but are not limited to:

  • Parent engagement
  • Strategies for discipline
  • Teaching and learning – content-driven including literacy
  • School culture
  • Identity including rites of passage/ rituals
  • Assessment practices
  • Special Education– breaking the SPED pipeline
  • Mental health
  • ESOL
  • Leadership – the delicate balance; personal/professional development
  • Mission- based professional development
  • Mentoring
  • Extended day/Saturdays/Summer including re-imagined strategies
  • College initiatives/college preparation

Proposal Instructions

In order to ensure a quality and informative experience for conference participants, COSEBOC is extending a call for workshops.  The Gathering of Leaders Design Team will review all submitted proposals and select conference workshops based on the following criteria:

  • Workshop title that reinforces the theme and the importance of Re-Imagining Schooling for Boys and Young Men of Color.  The submitted proposal should be no more than three pages in length.
  • The proposal should inform the academic, social, character and emotional development of boys and young men of color.
  • The proposal should demonstrate the promise of being a replicable and sustainable practice that strengthens the core areas of the Standards and Promising Practices for Schools Educating Boys of Color.
  • The proposal should be informative and driven by research and data and/or addresses the question; what makes this presentation different? 
  • The proposal in its design will provide conference participants with an interactive, authentically based experience and will incorporate understandings of adult learning. 
  • COSEBOC encourages proposals that will include students as partner-presenters in the presentation.

We recommend that you bring your own laptop if one will be necessary for your proposed workshop.  We will do our very best to try to accommodate your technology needs indicated in your proposal.

Proposal Timeline

  • February  5, 2010: Submit workshop proposals to Michelle Raymond at admin@coseboc.org
  • February 26, 2010: Presenters of selected workshops will be notified.
  • April 23 and 24, 2010: Workshop presentations

Priority will be given to proposals that have the potential to influence school and school district policy and provide innovative solutions to current educational challenges confronting boys and young men of color.  No honorarium will be available; the registration fee for the Gathering will be waived for workshop presenters.  Selected proposals will be posted on the COSEBOC website.
