David Clifton Banks
President, The Eagle Academy Foundation

David Banks is the President of The Eagle Academy Foundation and was the Founding Principal of The Eagle Academy for Young Men, an innovative all-boys public high school in New York City established in 2004. As President, he is responsible for the successful leadership and management of the organization which is charged with replication of the successful Eagle model. As the Founding Principal, he was directly responsible for the development and implementation of the overall academic strategy, in addition to direct oversight of the Academy’s day-to-day operations.

The Eagle Academy for Young Men, the first all-boys public high school in New York City in over thirty years, is a nurturing institution which believes that excellence, both in character and scholarship, opens doors and provides a bridge to equality. The Eagle Academy for Young Men represents a partnership between students, school staff, parents, mentors, and community partners committed to the guiding principles of academic excellence, leadership and character development. These principles are supported by our core initiatives which are mentoring, community service, extended day activities, Saturday Institute, summer programs, and parental involvement. The Eagle Academy was established as part of New York City’s twenty-first century high school reform initiative; an accomplishment achieved through a unique partnership with One Hundred Black Men, Inc.

Prior to joining The Eagle Academy, David served as the Founding Principal of The Bronx School for Law, Government & Justice. This theme-based high school provided a unique opportunity for David to combine his law and education background. During his tenure, David helped spearhead a community-wide effort to secure a permanent home for the school. As a result, Bronx Law is now housed in a $75 million, state of the art facility, representing an unprecedented partnership between the criminal justice community and an inner-city high school.

David began his career in 1986 as a teacher in Brooklyn at Public School 167. While teaching, he earned a law degree and began pursuit of a law career in 1992. David was a Senior Student Legal Specialist at the New York City Law Department in the Office of the Corporation Counsel and was appointed Deputy Director of Community Outreach at the New York State Law Department in the Office of the Attorney General. David’s undying passion for children called him back to the Department of Education in 1995 where he served as an Assistant Principal at P.S. 191 in Crown Heights.

David’s deep belief in giving back to the community is evident in his commitment to educational organizations and community groups. He worked with a group of principals who served as an advisory council to New York City Schools Chancellor Joel Klein. David is a member of the Board of Directors for Building with Books, Inc., a national organization that builds schools in developing countries and empowers U.S. youth to make a positive difference through community service, fundraising and education. Additionally, David was a Cahn Fellow at Columbia University’s Teachers College and is a member of the Board of Directors of One Hundred Black Men, Inc.

David is a graduate of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey and received his Juris Doctorate from St. John’s University, School of Law. He earned his Educational Administration and Supervision certification in only one semester by attending three colleges; Brooklyn College, City College and Baruch College.

David and his family were featured on the front cover of Time Magazine’s October 30, 1995 issue due to their participation in the “Million Man March”. David and his wife Marion reside in New Jersey with their four children Jamaal, Aaliyah, Ali and Malcolm Rashaad.
